  • This is a church of welcoming loving people. Greeters open the doors, and visitors are escorted to classes. Childcare providers hand out pagers to the parents so they don't worry about their children. Pastor David teaches the Bible and above all teaches that we are commanded to Love One Another. It's also very exciting to see a group of people so committed to mission projects both at home and abroad.

  • This is a house of Jesus the Lord. I mean it.

I've been to many services here. Whenever arriving on time and going anywhere near the front doors, I have been pleasantly greeted. Greeters go into the sanctuary like everyone else when the songs start. Even on the quieter, more solemn days in which half the congregation is sick and the other half is mourning lost loved ones, I have seen no shortage of smiles and waves. When attending a study group, I have consistently been told that my input was appreciated. I have always been welcomed, appreciated, and loved, with no bias against me for being strange or young.

I do feel like the music could use some more variety (more hymns, more ways to sing, more instruments/instrumentals played through the computer to open up more possibilities, such like that), but at least you know that everyone's heart is on worship.

The messages are consistently true and righteous because they are consistently from God's Word. If you want to discuss semantics, nuances, and speculation on impertinent details, Pastor David and others are happy to hear your perspective and maintain a pleasant, interesting discourse. If you want to defy core principles of God, though, while you can tell us so that we can hopefully reason with you and pray with you, you will have to ultimately either accept logic as granted by God or talk to Him about why you think your personal inclination matters more that His absolute definitions.

The only thing that we have ever spoken of in hatred is evil. To love good is to hate evil. "Hate the sin, love the sinner" is a principle that we take very seriously; while not a direct quote from God, the principle is expressed very clearly throughout the whole Bible, and we treat it as such: a concrete value.

The format of the modern church has many flaws, as is to be expected, since we are human. Pastors are susceptible to becoming arrogant, congregations are susceptible to becoming complacent, churches are susceptible to becoming dogmatic (specifically referring to things that we should not be so haughty about, such as some details of church administration), the bulk of congregations are susceptible to becoming uncaring or uninformed of decisions that affect the whole church, preachers are susceptible to focusing too much on milk messages and never getting to the meat, preachers are susceptible to focusing entirely too much on their chosen topics without addressing other passages, and we're susceptible to a "club mentality," in which we get together for an hour or so once per week out of habit/to fulfill social norms (especially in the so-called "Bible Belt"), but never get into thoughtful discussions, socialize, or otherwise behave as the family that we ought to be.

David and Gina (his wife) are acutely aware of these struggles, and they address them with thought and care. They remain humble, engage the congregation, encourage people to discuss openly, invite everyone to come to board meetings and announce them in advance, socialize, encourage others to socialize, put great thought and care into a wide variety of sermons and smaller group studies, encourage people vehemently and with great conviction to attend smaller group studies (though, again, this is not at the expense of pouring one's heart into the primary sermons, which is great news when you're up against too many schedule conflicts to attend much else), invite everyone to come to dinner at the church, and just generally treat everyone as brothers and sisters.

Modern churches have many struggles, but these people do everything that they can to endure them with God's abundant grace and righteousness. If you want a church that'll just say "Jesus loves you" twelve different ways among what is essentially just a Christian-flavored music concert with fluff, this is not the right church for you. If you want to get with people who want to be your family with Christ, teaching, exhorting, serving, giving to, and administering to one another, you found it.

Like many, I'm one that has trouble finding just the right church. And after visiting some time ago I felt compelled to share my unique experience with this church. This particular day there didn't seem to be any greeters, at least where I came in. There were very few people congregating to talk and even fewer people smiling. The message was also one of hate, condemnation and seemed to focus on a minority few. With a lot of head shakers affirming the message, I knew instantly I had not found a home. Today I am in a church that I enjoy, almost always has a relevant, uplifting message, and while there are words for sinners it seems to be less condemning than the visit I had here. I would not recommend this church, though I do recommend looking at many others until you find your place in one of God's houses.

  • This church is so welcoming! They are focused on missions both near and far and have have a spot for everyone to serve if they so choose. They provide many outreach opportunities to all ages and areas of the community...I particularly love the yearly fish fry and Wednesday night AWANA for the children! The nursery hands out really helpful pagers that vibrate if a parent is needed (like the ones at restaurants that let you know your table is ready) which is super comforting! The music on Sunday mornings is a good mix of praise band worship songs as well as hymns to please anyone and everyone, and God's word is preached by pastor David and Bradley every Sunday morning, evening, and Wednesday evening. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time at Hillcrest and look forward to meeting more people who would like to be apart of our family! Welcome home to Hillcrest!
